It's really just made to hold photo paper.

Q: Is it wall mounted only or is there a way to stand it on a counter?

This item is only for a wall mount. There is no easel

Q: What is the thickness of the black frame?

I did not measure the thickness but it is nice and thick. I will guess it is 1/2 inch. I found these to be very sturdy. I bought 2 and I used them as gifts and both recipients were very pleased.

The frame is nice but it is not 5x7. Don't trust other reviews that say it is. It is actually smaller and your pictures will be ones over the others.
