Q: Can i use this amp to bypass my knackered active amp ie just usse the shell and connect direct to the speaker?

Yes I bought it to do this myself just had to open the sub and disconnect the plate amp. Used the speaker connections for convenience wired to be a passive sub.

No it need a full range speaker and then used with an active sub woofer

as long as your current amplifier has a sub out channel or any such output that can provide a signal such as a tape out.

In full frequency mode the unit is just a straight forward amp and will drive a passive bookshelf as normal. Since you are using an active sub it will tap of the signal going to the bookshelf again as normal.
