Fantastic resource for healthcare providers, patients and social scientists

A fantastic resource for healthcare providers (whether working within trans healthcare or not), patients (for gender/transition-related and healthcare more generally) and social scientists.Especially valuable to me as a social scientist are chapters two and three, which provide a clear and concise overview of the language of contemporary (Western) trans communities as well as the concepts that lie beneath, including insightful historical contextualisation. As a (socio)linguist the glossaries at the end of chapter one are particularly useful, which cover the key terms in current circulation as well as terms to avoid. What's most useful about this, beyond defining terms, is the commentary on the politics of these words and discussion of how language has changed over time, partly as a reflection of shifts in the underlying conceptual frameworks. The remainder of the book offers a fairly comprehensive guide to trans people's interactions with the (UK) healthcare system, both for gender/transition-related services and healthcare more generally. This will be invaluable to me as I seek to navigate trans healthcare myself in the near future, and as I continue to do my bit to advocate for non-binary inclusion in healthcare systems more generally, which are rarely structured for non-binary recognition anywhere near sufficiently.I highly recommend this book, and implore anyone with an academic or professional interest in trans communities to check out other scholarship (and non-academic writing, such as on Beyond the Binary) by the author, Ben Vincent, a rising star within the field of trans studies!

Very helpful

I was recommended this from my daughter's councillor so we as parents know what to expect and the timeline for treatment. What a wonderful, insightful read a must for ALL DRs but also very helpful for family members to we can help and support our family members going through the NHS & private process.A truly wonderful insightful read.Thank you

Iconic new piece of literature perfect and essential for medical professionals and patients alike

This book has served me in both self-advocating and in supporting others. This book has supported my partner in self-advocating.This book was appreciated greatly by my partner's GP when taken along to an appointment.Medical students at the GP appointment scrambled to take the name of this book down.I have even been able to get my GP mother to take a level of interest in the book.I just want more medical professionals getting ahead of the game for the sakes of their patients who are refusing to be invisible - this book is so clearly laid out and is both accessible and informative to the necessary degreees (a feat!) and a much needed update on the literature available.

An essential read for the modern practioner

This book is a perfectly pitched introduction to and exploration of holistic transgender healthcare. As a medical student myself, I have recommended this text to colleagues and lecturers alike, who have all expressed keen interest. The book covers key areas such as pronouns, patient interaction and trans healthcare in children. Both sensitive and supportive of the reader , this book covers the pragmatic and theoretical with equal poise. An essential read for the modern practioner.

Finally: a clear textbook on transgender health for GPs

As a GP I would highly recommend this book to my colleagues. This is a sensitive and well researched, highly accessible guide to an area of care which is becoming increasingly important. Where so much information is either extremely academic and biochemical, jargonistic, or politically charged, this helps a GP navigate all the areas of care from understanding the experiences of their trans patients, the treatment pathways, the current service provision (with an honest discussion of where they are lacking) and the treatment processes. We are in need of more formalised training for GP trainees in this area, and I am sure this book could quickly become the main recommended text.
